Magic Win For Nichols

May 10, 2017

The Shane Nichols trained filly Ocean Magic broke through for her first win at Geelong on Tuesday in the B & B Aluminium 3YO Fillies Maiden Plate over 1300m. The three-year-old was coming off a third placing last start at Cranbourne over 1200m and relished the extra ground on the Synthetic course.

She jumped fairly away under Alan Creighton, who was having his third sit on the filly, before she was eased in the early stages and then settled amongst the back markers. She was given a pretty easy time out the back with Creighton saying she felt "really good" compared to other times he has ridden her.

Rounding the turn Creighton went to the outside and came down the middle of the track with a strong finish really winding up at the 200m mark to run away with the win.

"Shane said to me before the race just be patient on her and save her for that last crack at them," Creighton said.

"I put the stick away and just kept straightening her and she probably hit the front a bit too easy and then started having a good look around but she was able to hold on well."

Creighton also thought she was a filly that had some good racing still ahead of her saying "she should be able to go on if Shane places her well."

Shane Nichols, who trained his second winner of the week after I Am The General won on Sunday at Racing.com Park, was thrilled with the win.

"It was a very well deserved win and the owners of this filly are good friends of mine so its good to see them have a win," said Nichols.

"She looked to get a bit lost when she hit the front so easily but Alan rode her to instruction and she was able to have a good go at them down the straight.

"She's picked up some good bonuses here as a Vobis filly and we believe that she could be a city class filly this time of year after a bit of a freshen up."

Ocean Magic is by Wanted and is out of the Mujadil mare, Mermaid Island. Mermaid Island was a winner at two and was also Listed placed. She has gone on to produce Listed winner Ondina and stakes performed horses Data Point and Holy Cow.

Ocean Magic was a $22,000 purchase by Nichols out of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
